With another year of weddings in prospect, which big ideas and trends will 2018 be remembered for? While some traditions remain prominent, a lot of couples are saying “I do” to newer habits. From the continued rise of low season weddings to the most popular special features and money-saving trends, here are some of the things that stand out:
Seasonal west country weddings
Winter and low-season weddings are stylish and here to stay
If the idea of hosting a wedding in October, December or even a chilly February day might have raised a few eyebrows a decade ago, how different things are today. Whether it’s our mild climate or more budget-conscious brides and grooms, autumn, winter and low season weddings in Devon and the South West are booming. There are some key reasons why too. Stylistically, they can be great fun and just as beautiful as summer celebrations in their own quirky way (think rich autumn colours or festive charm and you’re halfway there).
Equally though, savvy couples know that they are more likely to get the exact date they want at a more affordable price if they think beyond the peak summer season. Who are we to disagree? We are seeing more and more weddings late and early in the year now, with a busier November than ever ahead, for example. Great for couples looking for flexibility and great for hotels and venues that can tailor these seasonal events beautifully now that they are a regular fixture.
Most popular west country wedding extras and fun special features
As much as many couples are looking to get married for less, special add ons and entertaining features remain a must-have to make receptions memorable. In the era of the selfie, perhaps it should come as little surprise that wedding photo booths remain among the most popular extras. Suppliers like The Bubble Booth (above left) provide props and fun galore, or for true retro charm The Little Red Bus is another North Devon favourite
As for other special wedding add ons, hiring your own casino has been a particularly big hit for winter weddings. Several companies offer this, including Crème de la Crème Fun Casino (above right). Don’t worry about bankrupting your guests though; it’s all for fun and novelty prizes, rather than costing wads of tenners.
Simpler flowers and affordable wedding photography solutions
Do you really need to skimp on flowers or photography? Many professionals offer simple packages to make your big day beautiful without costing the earth (Image above: MK Collins Photography, who offer an excellent basic package )
Do you absolutely have to have a wedding photographer and dedicated flower arranging these days? We are certainly noticing more couples cutting back on these extras, perhaps to save money or make the day more personal. If you have relations or close friends able to help, that’s perhaps understandable, but it does sometimes seem a shame.
Wedding flowers needn’t cost the earth and using local suppliers can keep things eco-friendly while getting just the right service for your budget. The same is true of wedding photographers. If funds are tight you needn’t have an engagement shoot, DVD and the rest… just keep it simple and negotiate around your available funds. Putting key responsibilities on loved ones is a lot of pressure too. Can they truly relax and enjoy the day while doing the role of a dedicated professional? It’s a big ask and you only get one chance to make things perfect. Most professionals will happily discuss your needs and plan around your budget, so why skimp on the most important photos of your life?
Special touches, favours and recommended wedding entertainers
Naturally, no matter how big or small the wedding, we are always keen to showcase the best local suppliers at our events here at Northcote. We are especially lucky when it comes to smaller providers who do something different and unique too, with a lot going on in Devon these days.
One magical touch to any wedding is a harpist; we’re privileged to have a nationally renowned harp player in Emma Graham to add a truly beautiful sound to any wedding. Nor does it cost a fortune for her to pull on your guests’ heartstrings, with prices starting at under £200. See https://www.goldenharp.co.uk/
As for wedding favours, retro sweets are definitely in. But if all that sugar seemed a bit unhealthy, how about a serving of organic Devon honey and other bee-autiful treats as a little keepsake for each wedding guest? Look no further than Quince Honey Farm.
Beautiful west country weddings at Northcote Manor
With friendly, experienced staff, stunning grounds and Double AA Rosette-awarded food, Northcote Manor is one of the most romantic places to get married in Devon this year.
