Glorious Days in North Devon
Whether you are looking for a little adventure or pure escapism, there is no better time to enjoy a minibreak in North Devon. Wonderful countryside and rugged beaches await, along with the promise of superb food and the best in regional hospitality at Northcote Manor. Here are just some of the reasons that Devon comes pretty close to heaven:
Delights of the Tarka Trail
Stretching from Barnstable through some of Devon’s most idyllic countryside, the Tarka Trail is paradise for the intrepid rambler, bike rider or wildlife lover. Perfect for a long, leisurely days out, this quiet kingdom is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle, where the only local “twitter users” are birds.
Cycling is a fantastic way to explore miles of quiet trails, with providers such as Tarka Trail Cycle Hire making it easy to get out on two wheels. However, you could just as easily bring your walking boots or even saddle up on horseback. Miles of calm, car free routes await. Try the Devon County Council site for a series of circular walks, complete with maps and notes.
The Cream of the Fly Fishing Season
Talking of Tarka, don’t be too surprised if you see an otter at close quarters on the very rivers which inspired Henry Williamson’s book. There are certainly no shortage of fish and enjoying a day’s fly fishing is easy, with various beats on the Torridge and River Dart within a short drive. You could have a cast with the conservation-minded Westcountry Angling Passport scheme.
Wild brown trout are the favourite quarry for May; arrive late in the month and you might also see the season’s namesake cream-coloured mayflies hatching en masse; a sure recipe for exciting fishing!
