Local Beaches

From sweeping golden bays to hidden coves, North Devon boasts some of the UK's most breathtaking beaches.  The north coast is a World Surfing Reserve, known for the popular surf beaches of Croyde, Saunton, Woolacombe and Westward Ho!

Venture a little off the beaten track to explore a multitude of hidden coves and quieter beaches.  Many North Devon beaches carry the blue flag and seaside award status, offering excellent conditions for watersports.

Most of the countryside surrounding North Devon’s beaches is protected by the National Trust, remaining refreshingly unspoilt. Whether you prefer to surf, kayak, walk or simply search for shells, here are some of the best beaches in North Devon, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Saunton Sands

This long, golden stretch of sand is backed by the beautiful Braunton Burrows sand dune system, a UNESCO biosphere reserve. A popular surf beach, Saunton is popular with surfers and families, offering gentler conditions than Croyde Bay.

Saunton Sands offers a range of facilities including cafes, toilets and shops and dogs are allowed on the beach year round.

Woolacombe

One of North Devon’s finest beaches, Woolacombe has won numerous awards for its three-mile stretch of golden sands and clear water.  Popular with surfers and families, the beach is so long, it’s always possible to find a quieter spot.

The beach facilities are excellent and include cafes, toilets, shops and plenty of parking spaces. Dogs are allowed on the beach but there are restrictions during the summer months.

Rockham Bay

Situated near Ilfracombe, this beautifully secluded beach is only accessible at low tide.  Backed by rocky cliffs, you can park in the village of Mortehoe and clamber down the scenic 2 kilometre coastal path to the beach.

Perfect for rockpooling and exploring, there are several sandy areas at low tide and you can walk to the headland at Morte Point.  There are no beach facilities or lifeguards. Dogs are allowed on the beach year round.

Lee Bay

Another secluded beach, Lee Bay is located 2 miles west of Ilfracombe in an area of outstanding natural beauty.  Surrounded by cliffs and hills, this secluded bay is a true North Devon paradise.

Park in Lee village and walk down to the beach. There are no lifeguards and currents can be strong. Dogs are allowed all year round.

Putsborough Sands

Another picture-perfect sandy bay, Putsborough Sands beach is simply beautiful.  One of North Devon’s top surf spots, this beach is located on the South side of Woolacombe so it's usually a little quieter. You can walk along the beach to enjoy Woolacombe’s cafes and facilities.

Dogs are allowed on the beach from October to April.

Westward Ho!

Westward Ho! is a vibrant seaside village in North Devon, famous for its golden, Blue Flag-awarded beach. A haven for surfers, families, and nature lovers, it borders the stunning Northam Burrows and South West Coast Path.

Westward Ho! blends classic seaside fun with natural beauty, making it the perfect destination for a relaxing coastal escape.

Dogs are permitted from October to April on the whole beach and all year round at the Northam Burrows end.
