Local Attractions
Whatever the Great British weather has in store, there’s a dazzling array of things to do in North Devon. From beekeeping and island hopping to discovering local history and riding the world’s highest water-powered railway, there’s something for everyone.
Here are a few of our favourite North Devon attractions.
Lundy Island
Lying off the coast of North Devon, this rocky granite island is home to an array of wildlife and a small village with an inn, church and 13th Century castle. A disused lighthouse offers spectacular views over the ocean and, if you’re lucky, you might spot the odd sunbathing seal.
At just 5km long and 1km wide, Lundy Island is the perfect size for exploring. The Island can be reached by boat, charter or, our favourite, helicopter.
Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway
This multi-award winning tourist attraction promises an adventure you’ll never forget. The world’s highest and steepest water powered railway connects the picturesque Devon towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. The historic funicular cliff railway is fully powered by water and provides showstopping coastal views.
The historic towns of Lynton and Lynmouth are worth exploring. Lynton is perched 500 ft above the coastal harbour town of Lynmouth and you can take the scenic walk from Lynmouth to Watersmeet, known as England’s ‘Little Switzerland’.
Quince Honey Farm
You’ll be simply buzzing after a day out at North Devon’s historic working honey farm. Wander through the Nectar Gardens, visit the honey factory and learn how honey is extracted and bottled.
You can try your hand at making a beeswax candle and explore interactive hives, seeing millions of bees in action. From exclusive beekeeping experiences to beekeeping demos, not forgetting honey sampling, this is a day out with a difference.
Clovelly
Consistently ranked as one of North Devon’s top attractions, Clovelly is well worth visiting. Explore the traffic-free cobbled streets lined with picture-perfect cottages, the ancient fishing harbour and 14th Century Quay.
Step back in time as donkeys and sledges transport goods to and from the village, try your hand at fishing and crabbing and discover local history at the Fisherman’s Cottage and Kingsley Museum. Clovelly hosts festivals and events throughout the year.
Arlington Court
Explore this impressive National Trust-owned regency house on the edge of Exmoor. Owned by the Chichester family for over 500 years, the house is packed with a treasure trove of collections from model ships to shells.
With over 20 miles of footpaths to discover, ornately planted formal gardens and pleasure grounds, a tea room and fascinating carriage museum, Arlington Court promises a captivating day out.
Instow Village
Instow, a picturesque village in North Devon, is a hidden gem where golden sands meet serene estuary waters. Overlooking Appledore, it offers stunning coastal views, charming cafés, independent shops, and traditional pubs, perfect for a relaxing day out.
