If you’re looking for a real hidden gem, try Marwood Hill Gardens. Tucked away in a secluded valley near Barnstaple, this 20-acre private haven of ornamental lakes, rare plant collections and peaceful woodland paths. It’s also one of just six Camellia Gardens of Excellence in the UK.

Explore historic houses and country estates

If you prefer your gorgeous gardens with the glorious architecture of a historic house, there’s plenty to choose from in North Devon.

If you choose one, choose Arlington Court on the edge of Exmoor. This complete family estate has been with the Chichester family for over 500 years, however the house itself was built in 1823 in a Neo-Classical style with a Greek Doric porch. Inside, the cosy rooms keep a lovely homely atmosphere with several curious collections from model ships to shells to an entire museum of carriages in the stables.

North Devon is full of exceptional options not far from Northcote Manor. Hartland Abbey is a 12th century monastery and ancestral home filled with unique architecture and collections gathered across generations. Knighthayes offers a glorious example of Gothic Revivialist architecture, complete with gargoyles and grotesques, and an impressive rare plant collection.

Valley of the Rocks

Not far from the amazing cliff top railway in Lynton, mentioned above, is this dramatic coastal valley. Wild-roaming goats scramble over the jagged, rugged landscape making a distinctive and picturesque sight on an early morning wander.

Morte Point

If dramatic coastlines really do peak your curiosity, Morte Point is a must. Not far from Woolacombe, the jagged ridges and craggy outcrops have claimed many passing ships over the years. Look out for grey seals and plenty of marine birdlife as you marvel at the sweeping coastal scenery. 

Heddon's Mouth

For a gentler seaside amble, take a calm and easy wander through the ancient woodlands by the River Heddon. Through the Heddon Valley, river meets sea among towering cliffs and a sweet pebble beach - an enchanting spot to take in the natural beauty of Devon.
