With an idyllic sense of seclusion and stacks of “secret” corners to explore, it’s little surprise that north Devon is such a popular choice for a Valentine’s Day getaway. Those who enjoy culture and shopping love the pretty towns, arts and crafts; but it’s equally tempting to escape into some of Britain’s most wild and inviting countryside too.
Where is the ideal place for lovers in Devon? This sort of question can virtually spark war between rival tourist boards- but here are a few destinations we think are just perfect for couples and romantic days out in Devon:
An artistic view for two: RHS Rosemoor Garden, Great Torrington (EX38 8PH) 11miles/ 20mins from us
Besides the lure of pristine winter gardens to explore, guests will discover a whole trail of creativity with the Winter Sculpture Exhibition that runs from the present to 22nd February. Free guided walks are another feature, although for a perfect romantic trip out for two we would suggest a quiet weekday excursion to explore at your leisure. This is also a good spot to take your significant other out for a spot of tasty, homemade fare with the new Rosemoor Garden Kitchen opening on Valentine’s Day itself. Winter splendour for nature lovers: Exmoor National Park, 18 miles/ 40 mins from us
For true lovers of the British Countryside, winter is a time to savour rather than take shelter in the nearest gift shop. With the fair weather visitors absent, now is the best time of all to take a wander and immerse yourself in the delightfully cool isolation of the moors. Don’t expect the wildlife to be slumbering either; with less human disturbance and spring thinking about stirring, this can be an excellent time to spot deer, birds of prey and other species in their element. Escape to a romantic bygone age: Arlington Court, nr Barnstaple (EX31 4LP) 22 miles/ 47 mins from us
Besides a splendid collection of historic treasures to discover within this National Trust property, a wealth of secret paths and a lakeside walk provide further opportunities for lovers to get lost together. Whether you enjoy the Victorian gardens or the enchantment of gilded carriages and other remnants of yesteryear, this is a charming place to leave the modern world for a day with someone you love. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/arlington-court/
Songs to win your heart: Valentine’s Day with Sally Barker at the Plough Arts Centre, Torrington (EX38 8HQ) 11 Miles /20 mins from us
If music is your own food of love, here is a performance not to miss from the singer whose voice brought a tear to the eye of Tom Jones. Sure to be a romantic and enjoyable evening. Other listings and event details here: www.theploughartscentre.org.uk
